Episode 26

Mark Tonelli: On Jazz Guitar, Military Music and Brazil

Published on: 18th March, 2022

On this episode, Allison Emm talks with musician, composer, and educator Mark Tonelli. Mark coordinates the guitar studies program at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and spends a lot of his time otherwise focusing on performing. He has seen many sides to music - he was in the army for ten years playing with the West Point Jazz Knights, and even worked on a cruise ship as part of the entertainment. With a wide range of knowledge and experiences, Mark shares all of this with his students in an attempt to help them create their own sustainable music careers.

Mark is looking forward to heading off to Brazil as a Fulbright Scholar for the United States. This interview is, as a result, Part I of a two part set in which TMV will learn about how Mark has been able to introduce more jazz music to the South American country, while learning more about their own rich culture while there.
